Limited Fanart

I installed Gemstone on a clean v9 install. Previously I used the stock UI with Phoenix tools for fanart on v7. I didn't do any manual things to download fanart. My understanding is that Gemstone also uses Phoenix for fanart, (Phoenix Fanart is on in the options), but it is lacking a lot of what was pulled correctly on my previous install. I cleared the memory and disk cache, (although nothing seemed to be deleted on the disk), and did a rebuild, but no luck. For example, The Middle used to have all sorts of artwork, but now nothing is pulled, (posters, banners or backgrounds). On the other hand Jeopardy and some others are fine. Any ideas what I can do/check?

So a few TV recordings have been done now and the fanart is not showing up in the recordings list view. I have it set to use banners and posters. If I go into Fanart Manager the images are there and if I select one and say "Set as Default" it will then show up in the list view. Shouldn't it automatically populate something?

Yes it should but a few users have reported this issue and i have been looking into it....it is likely somewhere between phoenix and gemstone but have not found this yet. Any more details may help.... a log file...gemstone and phoenix... and any info on what the flow is using for a view source.

thanks

Yeah, I read some more in here and saw some similar reports. I saw several entries in my logs about not finding cache entry then file (which existed) via (I think) Sage IO. I would cut and paste them, but it seems like the logs may get truncated (?) as the current ones only have data going back a couple hours.

What I did is clear/rebuild the cache (and restart), and things worked. I'll have to wait until some new recordings show up to grab log entries...

I'm using the Recordings - All Recordings view in the Simplified style with the poster (episode thumbnail on the next level) on the right and banners on for the list items.

For this show, the background and episode thumbnail showed up automatically (second level), but the banner and poster did not show up.

Think I am having a similar problem... I'll post some logs when I can. But, I beleive my setup is similar. Meaning- Just came back to sage so I loaded up 7.19 got it working as I did back in the day. At least I think it was, didn't catch anything amiss. 'back in the day' I used the standard stv with malore menus (malore menus showing fan art above the description)

then I upgraded to V9 / open source.

then I discovered Gemstone... again "back in the day" my HD-100 couldn't handle phoenix or SageMC.

Once I was using Gemstone it seems that my Fanart is hit or miss.

If you notice a pattern please identify it as I am trying to resolve this for the Gemstone 2 release. As much info as possible for what items are missing fanart....are they only missing in gemstone..do you see the fanart in the Fanart Manager, or BMT or ??? Only Movies or TV as well, only posters or backgrounds too....etc.

Anything can help.

Thanks

I have had this issue as well, and reported it. But to me it seems to be a Phoenix issue as the files don't display properly in BMT either - the thumbnail in the top right of the screen is not populated until you set a poster as default on the "problem" media files.

It's all over the place for me and I don't see a pattern. Movies (List Flow with home video folders excluded) and TV (All Recordings). The fanart is in Fanart Manager and BMT.

For example: last night I recorded Quantico and Talking Dead and The Family, (things for which I hadn't previously fixed fanart). For Quantico I got a banner and poster displayed, but no background and no thumbnail. For Talking Dead I got a banner and a poster and a thumbnail displayed, but no background. For The Family I got a banner and a thumbnail displayed, but nothing else. However, if I pull up Fanart Manager all have multiple images available for everything: banner, poster and background. I'm not sure what creates the thumbnail.

I don't buy a lot of movies, but had similar issues there (fanart in BMT, but not displayed). A majority of them just worked. Some more obscure/older titles I had to manually download a missing piece of fanart or create a better one. But for others the fanart was there and just didn't get displayed.

A fix that seems to always work--a little heavy-handed for trying to find a root cause--is: clear memory and file cache, prebuild cache, then restart the SageTV service.

Gotham finished recording a little but ago and nothing is showing up including a thumbnail. However BMT has images for everything and defaults set.

I don't see anything odd in the logs. There are several entries like I posted before "Failed to find a cached image" and "Failed to load a sage image". I'm not sure if those are expected the first time something is attempted to be accessed, but guessing so as I see them for things that do end up showing fanart.

If there's a more scientific approach to help debug, I'm open to trying. I just tried setting defaults using Fanart Manager for some of the things missing and clearing/rebuilding the cache, but no luck. I usually have to restart the Sage service, but I've got several things recording tonight, so can't validate that yet. In the past, though, it would fix things even if I didn't manually set defaults.

This is a clean v9 install and I went straight to Gemstone, so don't have any of the Phoenix stock UI plugins I used before installed to show fanart.

OK just got home - I looked in my settings and I have two places that the fanart central repository can be set:

plugins
.. installed plugins
... Phoenix core services
... configure
... central fanart folder
-and-
Detailed Setup
... Customize
... MetaData Options
... Metadata configuration v3.1.5
... Phoenix Fanart Configuration
... Fanart Central Folder

Those two did not match, I've made them both the same and will report if I still have an issue.

Yes, as far as I know I need CMT to make .properties files. which I need for MCEBuddy.

OK so I went to my client (nexus player) - most stuff was OK. the following were not:

Once Upon a Time - had no fan art. went to gemstone fanart manager and selected items as default. There was no 'season' fan art to select. but I made a default for the show (poster, background and banner) - after this it showed a background and the little DVD size picture. but no banner art.

DC's Legends of tomorrow - I went in and selected a default for EVERYTHING (it had season fan art as well as show artwork) - and when I was done. Still nothing shows.

The Grinder - I went in and selected a default for EVERYTHING - and when I was done it had all the art work.

I don't know what this tells us (you) if anything? But...

I set up a client (windows 10 sageTV V9 Open source) and once I installed all the client side plugins and configured gemstone... Well, All the metadata is there on my Client PC. but the server, placeshifter clients, and the android mini-client all report as I mentioned above.

The client install is also looking at the fanart folder on the server. Client and Server are now using a shared folder to get to the fan art.

The other interesting thing is when I looked in the two locations that had fanart directories - well they were both correct on the client.

edit: and the shows it recorded last night have all the fanart as they should (on all clients)

its interesting that they were not the same....i will test this out to see how CMT is dealing with this setting... it may be a lost leader but worth a check.

The way the fanart works is there are 3 levels....the first is the central fanart folder, the second is the local cache and the third is an in memory cache. This is done for performance.

When gemstone needs a fanart image it creates a key from the media item to locate the fanart. It then checks if that key is in the memory cache, if not, it checks the local disk cache and lastly if needed goes back to the central fanart folder and then will create a cached item and loads that cached item to disk and memory so next time its in memory or at minimum in the local cache. The disk cache is "permanent" until deleted on purpose using the utilities but the memory cache is limited in size so it will not always have the image that is being requested.

The local cache and memory cache are on the server for all miniclients like HD2/300 or placeshifters/Android miniclients. For a PC client the local cache is on that physical client disk. The local cahce is under SageTV/userdata/phoenix/cache/gemstone....

So in the scenario above the issue is likely not in the central fanart folder but in the local cache/memory cache/or key generation....all of which I need to check out.

I recently did a fresh install of SageTV (copying only wiz.bin over) to a new OS (XP to Windows 7) and noticed that the fanart issue followed along.

Due to Paladin's post, I checked my own settings and noticed a discrepancy, as well. In BMT and the Phoenix Core Services plugin settings (which I assume are the same), it was set to the local userdata/Phoenix/Fanart folder, whereas everywhere else, it was set to my central fanart location. I'm changing it to the central folder and clearing/updating all caches to see what happens.

LOL! Sure. I was specifically talking about the locations he was referencing, which is why I didn't explain in more detail. However, the places I looked are in the attached screenshots.

Obviously we have too many places with the same setting. Even more scary that the value can be different.
