Forum Search method has been changed

The search method used by the forum has been changed... hopefully for the better.

I need to look into finding better info about what can be done with the new search type before posting that, but I at least wanted to mention the change so people could try it out. I noticed you can search for longer property names now.

A little more info... you can now do boolean full text SQL searches. Some notes:
  • If you search for a series of words with spaces between them and not within double quotes, the search will find results containing any of those words, as if there was an OR between each one.

  • You can use AND to indicate a term is required, same as using + in front of the required word: +word or AND word.

  • You can use NOT to indicate that a term must not be included in the search results. You are supposed to also be able to use - in front of the word to exclude, but it doesn't seem to work, so use NOT: NOT word

  • You can enclose a phrase in quotes to find that exact phrase: "search phrase".

  • You can end a term with * to find wildcard matches.

  • The shortest word for searching is 3 characters.

I'm sure there are other search tips, but those are the main points.

Is this a change. I can see this could potentially cause problems when searching for terms like NAS or QAM.

Yes, it was previously 3 and I've been looking into confirming if it is really 4 and how/whether we might change it back to 3.

Update: we figured out how to change the min search term length to 3, so searching for something like QAM now works again. The info in the 2nd post was updated to reflect this change.

Almost posted this elsewhere...

I think the best way to search the forum is to use google -- try searching for:
site:http://forums.sagetv.com/ <search term>

The funny thing is: when I tried that exact search, I came across this old post of mine talking about how it was new that you could search for 3 letter terms... but the min length is 4 again for some reason.

I was going to post this as a reply in the Windows 10 topic, then this sticky topic actually came back when I tried this google search. Who reads stickies!?
